Payton calls him Jace, baby, love, and sweetness. Xavier calls him creepy ass and several derogatory nicknames, and everyone else calls him Jason.

His villain name is Shadow because his powers are based on illusions that come from fear. Payton came up with it for him, he honestly didn't care. She said Siren and Shadow sounded cool and he always agrees with her.

He dropped out of school at 16 after discovering his powers and ran away from home.

Jason was born while his mother was still aggressively an alcoholic and also probably using. The probability then of him already being basically born an addict was so high. Both of his parents were horribly neglectful to him and his brother. They were terrible parents, both of them are users: his mother was a hardcore alcoholic & his father was a heroin addict. They introduced Jason to weed at a very young age to get him to calm down. That was pretty much his life until his then 14-year-old brother, Alex, overdosed on some terrible concoction he shot up.
His mother was present as Alex died and did nothing about it but tell Jason to go eat one of the brownies in the kitchen since he was being so annoying. He left home immediately after, moving to Philadelphia.
In Philly, he used his powers to get a place to stay and started selling weed that he'd stolen from his parents on his way out. Eventually, he learned how to manufacture drugs on his own and started selling those as well, leading him to meet Payton Evelyn Adler-Kent and Rebecca "Becky" Amelia Quinn.
He eventually becomes sort of a drug lord in Philly because of how hard the drugs he sells are, moving from manufacturing normal shit to creating new combinations of drugs that should have never existed.
He also learns that his parents got arrested for child neglect, endangerment, possession of illegal drugs, and murder. He's since trauma-blocked the belief that he even had a brother, believing that he's the reason his parents were arrested for child endangerment. He doesn't feel remorseful in the slightest.
He strikes a deal with local nightclubs for his drugs and continues to grow his empire as he starts (finally) dating Payton and they move in together. She had horror stories of this one bitch she went to college with. Jason hoped to never meet her.
Of course, he jinxed himself, because this "one bitch" calls Payton up and hauls her away to Manhattan. Jason's own addictions get worse without her.
One of the nightclubs he'd been working with was also in Manhattan: a club called Satan's Palace, run by a guy named Xavier Christian Agreste, although they were only on a first name basis. When Payton eventually asks him to move to Manhattan to be with her, he declined before realizing she was living with and working alongside his biggest buyer.
Once joining the Legion, which he didn't realize was a supervillain team for far too long, he worked much closer with Xavier, Madeline Rosalind Prince (Payton's crazy-ass college roommate), and James Cameron Samuels (some rich playboy that apparently also grew up poor as shit).
When Becky showed up with some random bitch a few months in, Jason was reasonably pissed. She'd been one of his biggest buyers before dropping off the map, and he'd assumed she was dead. When he offered to sell to her again, she said she was clean. Yeah, right.
He stopped doing his work with Xavier and fell deeper into his drug abuse. Payton's tried to help him several times to no avail. He keeps telling her he's trying to do better. He's lying.
Xavier drags Jason along on a deal and sells to a kid who couldn't have been more than 13. The kid took one of the pills immediately and started having a seizure that eventually killed him. Jason tried to save him. Xavier wouldn't let him. The incident brought everything that happened to Alex rushing back and Jason finally makes the first attempt at sobriety. (He fails immediately, but makes a pact with himself to never again sell to anyone under 20.)
He's finally working toward sobriety again (after Payton threatened to leave him) and it's killing him.

He's only ever dated Payton

Both of his parents were horrible. they're probably both dead and his younger brother, Alex was his best friend. Jason watched him die.
