Overview
James Talakar Mardrein
James Talakar Mardrein is the eldest son of Blaine Talakar Mardrein and Hanna Aileanach, Crown Prince of Atlania, and heir apparent of the Talakar line. Born the second child but first son, James inherited the expectations of Talakar tradition from an early age and was raised knowing that the throne was meant to be his. He was clever, quick-learning, naturally talented, and unusually good at picking up skills with little effort, but that ease became one of the great dangers of his life. Because so much came naturally to him, James rarely learned humility, patience, or the discipline required to master what did not immediately flatter him.
As a child, James wandered the palace freely, learning its rooms, hidden passages, habits, and secrets better than many members of the royal household. He was doted on as the future king, and as he grew older, fewer people were willing to correct him when his pride soured into arrogance. He became cocky, elitist, and increasingly dismissive of common people, believing that his birthright proved his superiority before he had done anything worthy of it. His skill with a rapier was real, but like many of his talents, it was weakened by lack of effort; James could dazzle lesser opponents, but struggled when faced with swordsmen of true experience, discipline, and patience.
His relationship with Andrew Hayes exposed many of these flaws. When Blaine attempted to broaden James’s education and training, Hayes was assigned as one of his tutors, but Hayes had little tolerance for bragging heirs who expected praise without work. The two clashed badly, and Hayes was eventually reassigned to train James’s cousin Robert LeTreis instead. This left James surrounded by more flattering tutors, reinforcing his belief that the problem had been Hayes rather than his own unwillingness to be challenged.
During the years surrounding the Treaty of Unity between Atlania and Stanzgar, James began to gain attention among nobles who favored elitism, expansion, and a stronger royal assertion of power. His claim was strengthened by the fact that the Blade of Drakes Wrath would answer to him, proving his right to rule under ancient law. Yet this legitimacy became the very thing that made him dangerous. As James grew increasingly erratic and began hearing voices, it was eventually discovered that he was being possessed and manipulated by the long-thought-destroyed Grand Emperor, returned as a profane lich.
The lich used James’s pride, royal legitimacy, and noble following to drive a wedge into Atlanian politics, turning a flawed heir into the center of a civil war. Because James was not merely a pretender but the lawful prince, those opposing him had to fight not only rebellion, but the terrifying possibility that ancient law itself seemed to favor him. The war that followed aimed to destroy the lich without killing James, and though that goal was achieved, the victory ruined him. James survived, but was left a shell of his former self, broken by the possession and the violence done through him. His cousin Robert Dùghlas LeTreis was crowned king in his place, leaving James as one of the most tragic failures of the Talakar line: a prince who might have become merely arrogant and difficult, had something ancient and monstrous not found the cracks in him first.

Looks
James usually has a bit of stubble, less as a deliberate fashion choice and more as a sign of careless self-presentation. He is old enough and vain enough to want a mature, princely look, but not disciplined enough to maintain the clean polish expected of a proper heir. The stubble suits his arrogant, slightly disordered image: handsome enough to make it seem intentional from a distance, but sloppy enough to reveal the lack of restraint beneath the royal confidence. As his behavior becomes more erratic, the unshaven look likely becomes more pronounced, adding to the sense that the crown prince’s outward control is beginning to fray.
James wears his hair around chin length, sloppily cut in a way that suggests vanity without discipline. It likely began as a fashionable, princely style meant to frame his face and set him apart from more severe military men like Blaine, but he does not maintain it with the care such a look requires. Uneven ends, loose strands, and a slightly careless shape give him an air of spoiled confidence, as though he assumes he will look impressive no matter how little effort he puts in. As his behavior grows more erratic, the style becomes even less controlled, making him look less like a romantic young heir and more like a crown prince beginning to come apart at the edges.
James’s hair is a muddy red, sitting somewhere between auburn, reddish brown, and dull copper. It carries enough red to mark him clearly within the Talakar family’s warmer Atlanian coloring, but it lacks the brighter, healthier fire seen in more striking red-haired figures. The shade suits him well: handsome, noble, and distinctive, but slightly darkened and muddied, like something that should have been brilliant but was never properly cared for. In certain light it may look richly auburn, while in shadow or during his more disheveled periods it appears heavier, duller, and more severe.

James is lean and well-muscled, with the athletic build expected of a young Atlanian prince trained in swordsmanship, riding, and courtly martial discipline. At six feet tall, he has a narrow but healthy frame, built more for speed, precision, and elegance than brute strength. His body suits a rapier fighter: quick, graceful, wiry, and impressive in practice bouts, duels, and formal displays. However, he lacks the heavier conditioning and hard-earned endurance of warriors with real campaign experience, reinforcing the difference between James’s natural talent and the deeper discipline he never fully developed.
James has a medium tan complexion, fitting his Atlanian heritage and royal upbringing. His skin carries the warmth common to the Talakar line without looking as weathered as someone who spent years campaigning, sailing, or laboring outdoors. The tone gives him a healthy, princely appearance, especially when paired with his muddy red hair and green eyes, but it also reinforces the sense that much of his life has been sheltered within palaces, training yards, and noble spaces rather than hardened by real battle or travel.
Atlanian
Green
Nature
James believes most Valarnans to be barbaric monsters, a view shaped by the devastation Valarna brought to Atlania and reinforced by the harder attitudes of his family and court. Unlike some who treat this hatred as grim memory, James folds it into his own sense of superiority, using Valarnans as proof that Atlania is surrounded by lesser, more brutal peoples who must be controlled or kept beneath royal strength. He also has a strong disdain for common people, seeing them less as subjects to be protected and more as a mass to be governed, taxed, impressed, or ignored. This elitism makes him attractive to nobles who want a stronger, more expansionist crown, but it also reveals one of his most dangerous weaknesses: James mistakes rank and bloodline for worth, and assumes those beneath him exist to confirm his importance.
James hears voices every now and then, a condition that begins subtly enough to be dismissed as stress, temper, arrogance, or the strain of being heir apparent. At first, the voices may seem like intrusive thoughts, flashes of certainty, or whispers that flatter his pride and feed his resentment, making it easy for James to mistake them for his own judgment. Over time, they become more frequent and more directive, worsening his paranoia, entitlement, and erratic behavior. What others initially see as the crown prince becoming more unstable is eventually revealed to be something far worse: the influence and possession of the long-thought-destroyed Grand Emperor, returned as a profane lich and using James’s ego, bloodline, and royal legitimacy as a doorway back into Atlanian history.
James is cocky, arrogant, and visibly pleased with himself, though not entirely without reason. He carries himself like someone who has been told since childhood that the throne is already his, and his natural talent only made that belief worse. He tends to smirk, scowl, lounge where he should stand properly, and speak with the casual confidence of someone who expects others to adjust around him. Around his entourage, he peacocks openly, showing off his sword skill, wit, clothes, and royal status for admiration. When challenged, however, his charm turns brittle quickly; James does not handle correction well, and even minor criticism can make him defensive, cutting, or openly contemptuous.
James is motivated chiefly by ego, birthright, and the need to be recognized as superior. Because he was raised as the Talakar heir and so many skills came easily to him, he came to believe that greatness was something owed to him rather than something he had to earn. He wants admiration, obedience, and confirmation that he is already the king Atlania needs, even when he has not done the work to deserve that confidence. This makes him easy to flatter and easy to manipulate, especially by voices that tell him what he already wants to hear: that his bloodline, talent, and claim to the Blade of Drakes Wrath prove he is destined to rule.
James’s greatest flaws are his oversized ego, fragile pride, and belief that he is better than he truly is. He is genuinely talented, especially with a sword, but because skill comes easily to him, he rarely develops the discipline, humility, or resilience needed to become truly great. He reacts poorly to correction, resents anyone who challenges him, and prefers tutors, nobles, and companions who flatter his abilities rather than force him to improve. His pride also makes him dangerously easy to manipulate; anything that confirms his sense of destiny, superiority, or royal entitlement can slip past his judgment. By the time the Grand Emperor’s influence takes hold, James already has the cracks needed for something monstrous to pry him open.
James is an excellent swordsman, especially with the rapier, and his talent is real enough that his arrogance is not entirely baseless. He learns quickly, moves well, and has the speed, precision, and confidence needed to impress in duels, training yards, and courtly displays. His problem is not lack of ability, but lack of depth: because swordsmanship comes easily to him, he rarely pushes himself through the difficult, humbling work required to become truly exceptional. Against lesser opponents he looks brilliant, but against a fighter with real battlefield experience, discipline, and patience, James can be pressed far harder than his pride is willing to admit.
James’s hobbies are sword fighting and peacocking with his entourage, both of which let him display the talents and status he believes should impress everyone around him. He enjoys practice bouts, duels, demonstrations, and any setting where his skill with a rapier can draw admiration. Away from the training yard, he likes surrounding himself with followers who flatter him, laugh at his remarks, and reinforce his sense of importance. For James, leisure is rarely quiet or private; it is another stage where he can perform the role of brilliant young heir, even when that performance hides how little discipline sits beneath his natural ability.
James is a cocky, insufferable young heir whose charm is constantly undermined by arrogance, entitlement, and a fragile ego. He is not talentless or stupid; in fact, much of the problem is that he is gifted enough to believe he never needs to struggle, listen, or improve. He enjoys admiration, status, and the attention of his entourage, but reacts badly to correction or anyone who refuses to flatter him. At his best, James could have been a clever, capable prince with real sword skill and political presence. At his worst, he is vain, elitist, dismissive, and dangerously easy to manipulate because he already believes the world owes him greatness.

Dark Violet
James is the Crown Prince of Atlania and heir apparent of the Talakar line, expected to learn the duties of kingship under his father Blaine. His occupation involves attending royal meetings, observing court politics, studying accounting, and preparing to inherit the throne, though James often treats these responsibilities as confirmations of his importance rather than work he must master. He is present for governance more than truly committed to it, preferring the visible privileges of being heir to the duller disciplines of rule. As he begins gaining a following among elitist and expansionist nobles, his occupation shifts from royal student to political figure, making his arrogance and later possession far more dangerous to the stability of Atlania.
James is elitist, expansionist, and increasingly attractive to nobles who want a stronger, more aggressive crown. He believes royal blood and ancient legitimacy matter more than compromise, popular support, or the concerns of common people, and he sees the throne as something owed to him by birthright rather than entrusted to him by duty. Politically, he favors expanding Atlanian power, strengthening noble hierarchy, and ruling through prestige, fear, and inherited authority. Because the Blade of Drakes Wrath responds to him, his claim carries dangerous symbolic weight, allowing ambitious lords to treat his arrogance as confidence and his entitlement as destiny. This makes James politically useful long before he is wise enough to understand how easily others can use him in return.
