Initially, he is apathetic towards political matters since he is a pirate and has no regard for the law. He eventually does align himself with Kit and King Matthew

Crispin was born to a young single mother who quickly gave him up as she was unable to take care of him. She left him with Crispin's father, Marcus, who is a fearsome pirate captain. Marcus then left Crispin with his friend, Roger because he knew that a pirate ship was no place for a baby.

Crispin was raised mostly by Roger, alongside Roger's own daughter, Rebecca. When Crispin was 10 years old, he discovered he had powers; specifically the gift of flight. He told Roger, who advised him not to tell his father.

When Crispin was 13 he went to stay with his father on his ship. The whole time he kept his powers a secret from both his father and the other crew mates. That is, until one night when his father caught him using his powers. His father was prejudiced against people with powers but Crispin tried to reason with him, hoping that maybe he would be able to get through to him. Unfortunately, he was unable to and after a fight that left Crispin badly injured he used his powers to leave the ship and find a safer place for himself.

At first, he meant to head back to Roger, but due to the nature of his injuries, he passed out and was rescued by a healer. The healer nursed him back to health and also mentioned a safe haven where people with abilities could be safe. At first, Crispin was skeptical but when the healer showed him some letters from his daughter who had been living there for a few years. Although he wasn't completely convinced, he decided he'd go anyways, figuring that if it was a trap, he could fight his way out.

Crispin doesn't really have a formal education. He knows how to read, write, as well as some basic math.
