Caleb is mostly pretty shy and reserved. Even around people that he knows well, he still tends to be pretty quiet. He is very sweet and caring and enjoys helping others when he can. It's not uncommon for him to get lost in a daydream. He likes to dream of travelling to different parts of the kingdom, and living a lavish lifestyle even though he knows it will probably never happen.

At the beginning of the story he works as a chimney sweep. When he relocates to New Vellarton he starts working alongside Alexis and Gerard as a healer.

Caleb was born and raised in the city of Farrowin. His family was very poor but his parents always worked their hardest to make sure that they had enough to provide for Spencer and his older sister, Eva.
One night when Caleb was still fairly young his father left in a hurry, giving no explanation to either of his two kids. It took Caleb a long time to realize that his father was never coming back and even longer for him to realize that his father left because he was being pursued by the Patrol (a group operating in secret dedicated to eliminating people with powers).

When Caleb was 12, a plague swept through his hometown and claimed the life of his mother. Caleb also got sick around this time, but turns out he was only developing fire powers, which Eva helped him control.

In the wake of his mother's death, Caleb and Eva were both sent to a workhouse. Caleb got a job working as a chimney sweep, while Eva tried a couple of different jobs before settling on selling newspapers. Because the workhouses were split by gender, Eva and Caleb didn't get to spend much time with each other. Caleb would mostly sit with his sister during meal times or would sometimes seek her out after work before returning to the workhouse.

Caleb doesn't have a formal education. His parents taught him how to read and write. When he was 10, he apprenticed under a Master Sweep so that he could become a chimney sweep.
