Purpose
The world was battered pretty badly by Calamity Ganon 100 years ago, and all the facilities that the military used to enjoy were nearly completely destroyed, so they have to start from scratch. Also, not everyone is particularly happy to have them around, especially on lands controlled by other countries, so they often clash with the armies and guards of other lands.
The goal of the Hylian military is to protect and serve the throne, it's interests at home and abroad, and it's people.
The soldiers are the main fighting force.
The guards protect the castle and the town.
The knights are the specialized fighting force; they're better trained and equipped than the soldiers.
The Royal Guard explicitly protect the the royal family within the castle and when out and about.
The Royal Knights are the royal family's personal guard detail, meant to stick to them like glue wherever they go.
The Lt. General services the General and helps him to maintain the army.
The General oversees them army on a more intimate level than the Commander and is responsible for their everyday maintenance during peace time and wartime.
The Commander General is the supreme leader of the military, second only to the throne. He is responsible for leading the military during wartime, and making sure that they are funded and ready for action during peacetime.
Loyalty to Queen and Country, as well as the need to eat, being that the military produces more jobs than any other sector of Hyrule.
Free-roaming monsters, bandits, environmental hazards, and disgruntled civilians are but a few of the risks that that soldiers must deal with when they're out on the job.
