Verena was born into the Winterbourne empire. Her parents hated all children of magic and despised and spat on the gods and goddesses. Verena's older sister was the same, but Verena had always been curious about the people she had been bred to hate. She came to love all children of magic, and befriended a few, who would always end up going missing. She would find out later that her parents had had them beheaded. Eventually, all children of magic ceased to exist in Ecra. Her parents cast her aside as two soft to rule, so she was paid nearly no attention to. Her sister was too busy preparing for her rule to pay much heed to the younger girl, so Verena was left to her parents advisors, who raised her in court eddicute. Verena grew to hate her parents and the way the ruled, and when it was Adeline's time to take up the throne, she hated the way her sister ruled as well, but was silenced. Adeline kept her by her side, however, for reasons Verena couldn't seem to place, but it left her an opening to dismantle the system from the inside. Verena began to find rebel groups and would help them, direct them in ways to hurt the Winterbourne empire slowly but deadly, until a strong number presented itself to officially challenge Adeline and her followers. Verena watched in silent horror as other Kingdoms fell to the Winterbourne Empire, as Adeline began to crave and crave and crave more. She had known Saskia Amaris Errapel and her husband, Joash, the king and queen of Sansora. They had been her friends, and she was devastated to learn about their deaths. After that, Verena began to suspect that something had overtaken her sisters body, though she didn't know what. She began searching for any evidence that Adeline was not who she used to be. Verena met Dimitri when he was fifteen, a young but passionate rebel. She started up her own group of young, talented, rebels to start up a revolution. Dimitri was her first recruit. She purchased the Keep in Angel's Cove and began recruiting others until she had a strong team of talented prodigys, one being a Seldra. When she met Kenna, she had no idea who she was. She had thought Kenna looked familiar when she first saw her, but shrugged it off as coincidence. When she learned of Kenna's decent, she was shocked, Saskia had never mentioned a second child.
